If it’s almost time to say hello baby, getting that all-important hospital bag ready should be close to the top of your to-do list.
To make it easier, break it down into sections: pack for the baby one week, pack for yourself the next and leave the essentials and perishables (like snacks) for a last-minute stashing. We’ve curated the ultimate hospital bag list by asking real mums what they toted to their birth.
We’ve also included some ingenious tips from mums who’ve been there and done that – we’re blown away at some of these clever inclusions.
Births are all unique, as is the length of time you’ll be staying in hospital. Just in case, pack a little more than you need to make sure you’re comfortable and happy.
- 2-3 packs of maternity pads
- flushable wipes (much kinder after a tear or episiotomy)
- breast pads
- soap-free wash (gentler for your nipples)
- headband, hair ties
- dry shampoo
- thongs (in case your feet remain swollen)
- nipple cream
- makeup – (you’ll be in a lot of photos)
- comfy pjs
- 5-6 pairs of undies a couple of sizes bigger than usual
- a comfortable birthing outfit
- 2 nursing singlets
- a cardigan (to stay warm during night feeds)
- 3 pairs of bed socks or slippers
- 2 maternity bras
- 3 pairs of comfy pants
- 3-4 tops
- a set of nice clothes to go home in
- snacks (for during and after birth)

- heat pack (for your breasts, back or shoulders)

- nappies (some hospitals provide them and others don’t)
