Bright and beautiful rainbows are one of my favourite themes to inspire crafts for my toddler.

Rainbow paper plate craft

Rainbow crafts are a fantastic way to teach children about colours. You can also tie it in with the Rainbow Song (I Can Sing a Rainbow etc) to improve language skills too.

For this super simple craft all you need is:

  • Paints
  • Paintbrushes
  • Cotton wool balls
  • Paper plate

It’s really cheap and easy to as you can see from the list of supplies needed and chances are you already have them at home.

This activity requires a bit of supervision from a parent, as you will need to cut the paper plate in half. You may also find your toddler needs help keeping their lines steady as they paint in the colours and to avoid mixing them up.

Once the paint is dried, the cotton wool balls are added to create the impression of clouds.

You could also add some blue tissue paper streamers underneath the paper plate to create the look of rain.

Here’s how we made our rainbow paper plate:

Get a plain white paper plate and cut in half.

Use child-safe paint in red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple to create the colours of the rainbow.

Once the paint is dry, glue the cotton wool balls to the ends of the rainbow to make the clouds.

There are lots more toddler crafts to try over on our 50 activities for bored toddlers article.
